Manufacturing of Ocular Prostheses
The making of an artificial eye is carried out in several steps. During an appointment with the ocularist, the eye colour of the patient is matched with a large set of semi manufactured prosthetics. The ocularist has over 1000 differently coloured semi-manufactured prosthetics available and a close match can almost always be obtained.
In a series of pictures we show the different steps that are required to make an artificial eye of glass. This is the complete process from glass tube to ready made prosthesis. To make a standard prosthetics takes the ocularist 30-40 minutes.
Note that all eye prostheses are custom made for the patient during the appointment. Our ocularists never fit any ready made prosthetics directly to patients. Ready made prosthetics do exist, but are only used by hospitals immediately after an eye operation, before the patient has had a custom made prosthetics fitted.
